Croydon University Hospital - Emergency Department

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust has embarked on a redevelopment programme on their University Hospital site.

The first major project in their journey is the provision of Emergency Department facilities to meet current demand and cater for the future.

TB+A are part of the Galliford Try P21+ team delivering a part new build, part refurbishment facility with a dedicated children’s emergency care department.

On completion the Trust will have the following facilities:

  • 28 major bays
  • 7 paediatric consult / examination rooms
  • 8 resucitation bays (including 2 paediatric)
  • new urgent care centre
  • 2 SLaM rooms

Our designs embed the provision of decant facilities during the planned 14-month construction period so that clinical operations can be maintained in full use for the whole of the works.

The existing resuscitation facilities remained in situ during construction. We therefore designed enabling works packages which maintained clinical operation of this critical service whilst allowing the Contractor to strip out the surrounding existing engineering services. This element of the project was successfully completed in 2015.

With the financing of the decant facility forming part of the main capital cost the Trust have needed to minimise expenditure.

We therefore worked closely with all key stakeholders to review the applicable healthcare standards, including HBN / HTM’s, to provide a detailed design compliance schedule that sets out areas of deviations of the standards whilst maintaining patient safety, the environmental conditions and clinical functionality.

In addition, we have included reviews of the P21+ standard components and included these in the project with agreement of all parties.

Our designs have achieved BREEAM ‘very good’ accreditation for the refurbished areas and ‘excellent’ for the new build. New plant has been provided throughout to specification compliant with Building Regulations Part L2A with the overall project achieving Part L2B with significant consequential improvements.

This new project is essential to maintaining an appropriate emergency department to meet the demands of the Croydon area whilst satisfying the care quality commission (CQC).
