Imperial College London, Glenister Lecture Theatre

We have been working with Imperial College London since 2006 and have successfully delivered more than 60 projects including Glenister Lecture Theatre, located at their Charing Cross Campus. This project was tasked with upgrading older lecture spaces to promote contemporary teaching methods and provide additional flexible study spaces.

Located in Hammersmith the lecture theatre was originally completed in the 1960s and has had little refurbishment since.

Prior to this project, our team has already successfully delivered two similar lecture theatres at South Kensington campus. The main goal was to repurpose the traditional tiered seating rows into group desking to promote alternative teaching methods and to also provide flexibility for students to use them outside of teaching hours for informal group study. These were so well received, a further six lecture theatres have been identified for similar refurbishments.

We were engaged to provide the MEP services design in a challenging programme for summer construction ready for the start of teaching in September. All new ventilation and cooling was provided using invertor driven fans with CO² sensing to optimise the ventilation according to occupancy allowing the space to be used by small groups of students outside of teaching hours with the plant running at reduced output to optimise energy use.

LED lighting was provided with a programmable lighting control scene setting system integrated with the state-of-the-art AV system. Lighting scenes were provided to enable the space to be used in a variety of functions with lighting control directly from the lecturers iPad (to allow the lecturer to be mobile when presenting).

Contemporary acoustic ceilings using natural materials were provided with the services distribution blacked out to integrate it visually above the wooden slatted panels. Services were positioned in the accessible areas of the ceiling for ease of maintenance. Power was provided to each seat in the form of USB A, USB C and 3 pin 13A outlets to provide flexibility of device connectivity.

AV provisions included flexibility to use large LED screens or projection for presentations with sight lines considered for students in all seating positions.

The project was successfully delivered during the COVID-19 pandemic (September 2020) with all the additional challenges that situation presented.
