World Earth Day

World Earth Day

We are committed to achieving our Sustainability at Heart agenda, by aligning our operations to the UN SDG’s and are on the path to becoming a net zero organisation by 2030.

Our achievements so far include:

UKGBC Net-Zero Commitment

TB+A signed and supported a letter to the UK Government calling for the immediate adoption of a 2050 net zero greenhouse gas emissions target, alongside more than 120 other businesses from a range of sectors. The letter of support for the Committee on Climate Change (CCC’s) recommendation to legislate this target has been supported majorly by members of the construction and property management sector. Over a third of the signatories were UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) members, showing the dedication and support from organisations in the built environment.

The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment challenges companies, cities, states and regions to reach Net Zero operating emissions in their portfolios by 2030, and to advocate for all buildings to be Net Zero in operation by 2050.

By setting ambitious ‘absolute’ targets, the Commitment aims to maximise the chances of limiting global warming to below 2 degrees, and ideally below 1.5 degrees, by drastically reducing operating emissions from buildings.

The Commitment provides a framework for organisations to develop globally ambitious yet locally relevant, flexible and universally viable solutions for their portfolio to both reduce energy demand and achieve net zero carbon emissions.

UK Building Services Engineers Declare

The crisis of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are two of the most serious issues of our time. Buildings and construction play a major part, accounting for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.

For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour. Together with our clients, we will need to commission, design and maintain buildings, cities and infrastructures as indivisible components of a larger, constantly regenerating and self-sustaining system in balance with the natural world.

TB+A recognise this and have committed to strengthen our working practices to create building services engineering outcomes that have more positive impact on the world around us.

Carbon Reduction

We have reduced our Carbon Footprint by 51% since 2011.

We have been working alongside the Camden Climate Change Alliance (CCCA) to contribute towards a zero carbon and low waste Camden. We have contributed to a 45% reduction in carbon emissions borough-wide. We have also maintained our CCCA 'Carbon Champion' Mark of Achievement for two years running, and have been awarded the Team Green MoA

Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan

As part of embedding sustainability at the heart of our business strategy, we are proud to have published our Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan, which is aligned to 12 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The key objectives are to:

  • Improve the sustainability performance of our clients' assets through our design work
  • Motivate and upskill our people
  • Promote and support sustainability outside of TB+A through influencing and encouraging other organisations
  • Raise the profile of the organisation externally, and establish ourselves as sustainability leaders.

The CCCA also produced a case study on our drive towards leading change using the UN SDG’s.

Sustainability Week

Every year we collaboratively organise a Sustainability Week event, which encourages engagement with our people, clients and industry partners. This is hugely successful and diverse with a focus on raising awareness of the current global issues, and encouraging our people and influencing others to live a more eco-friendly and mindful life.

We are currently planning for Sustainability Week 2020.

Science Based Targets

To support our Sustainability Strategy, we are currently working with Bioregional to progress the development of Science Based Targets. These will be a set of goals developed to provide us with a clear journey to reduce our Greenhouse Gas emissions.
