The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) plays a key role in driving change across the built environment by bringing together businesses, government and communities to address the climate and nature emergency.
Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP (TB+A) has been a long-standing partner of UKGBC, having started our work together in 2013. Since then, we’ve supported numerous events, programmes and initiatives to support UKGBC’s mission in establishing a built environment that enables both people and the planet to thrive.
Driving systems change
Incremental improvements are no longer enough to address the challenges facing the built environment. A shift is needed in how projects are conceived, funded, and delivered. Through our involvement in the UKGBC Systems Change Programme, we worked alongside industry partners to apply systems thinking to a live residential development in Havering. The project had stalled due to viability challenges and was reassessed through funding structures, sustainability ambition, and long-term social and environmental value.
Supporting regenerative places
Our involvement in the development of the UKGBC Regenerative Places Framework builds on this approach, focusing on how systems thinking can be applied in practice. A truly regenerative approach considers how projects can contribute positively to the places and communities they are part of, creating long-term social, environmental, and economic value. This involves embedding value into project briefs from the outset, engaging with existing communities to inform design and delivery, and supporting long-term stewardship, not just project completion. The Regenerative Places Framework is informed by the Three Horizons model, helping translate long-term ambition into practical steps that can be applied within real projects.

Informing policy and advocacy
Our involvement in UKGBC’s policy and advocacy work provides early insight into how standards and expectations across the built environment are evolving. This includes:
- Domestic retrofit and home upgrades, including initiatives such as the Warm Homes Plan and evolving MEES requirements
- Standards for new developments, supporting low-carbon, high-quality and well-connected places
- Climate resilience and adaptation, including greener infrastructure and more resilient neighbourhoods
- Renewal and repurposing of existing buildings and town centres, to improve performance and extend asset life.
Understanding how policy is developing allows us to respond in a way that is both forward-looking and practical, supporting clients in making informed decisions while making sure proposals remain deliverable.

Industry change relies on leadership at every level. Through our involvement in UKGBC leadership programmes, we continue to develop the skills and perspectives needed to respond to an increasingly complex and uncertain context.

Our role
As engineers, our role is to provide objective, evidence-based insight and apply it in a way that supports practical project outcomes. Our work with UKGBC informs how we approach projects, enabling us to move beyond compliance and support clients in delivering more resilient, sustainable, and well-considered developments.
